In my opinion, one of the best fun-punk bands to ever grace this Earth with their wackiness, SLOPPY SECONDS have been doing it for a good seven or eight years now. Yet they have yet to get the recognition they deserve and ya know, I think they like it that way. This interview was done by mail with B.A. in early 1994.

HOW ABOUT WE GET THE BAND HISTORY OUT OF THE WAY?
SLOPPY SECONDS- The group formed at a party in the mid 1980s, with the following line-up: Steve Sloppy - drums; B.A. - vocals; Dr Roadkill - guitars; and Bo'ba Jam - Bass. Our first EP was released in 1987. The Destroyed album followed on Toxic Shock in 1989. To date, there have been three Taang releases: The First Seven Inches and Then Some, Knock Yer Block Off, and the ep/CD5 Lonely Christmas. Roadkill left the group in August, 1993, and no permanent replacement has been named as yet. The group's fall tours will feature Kevin Carl on guitar.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COMIC BOOKS (BIG TWO, INDIE, OR UNDERGROUND)?
SLOPPY SECONDS- Steve was one of the millions who followed the death of Superman and the ensuing Saga. B.A. collects older comics, especially Legion of Super-Heroes, Avengers, and Justice League of America. As for the underground mags, we love Cherry Poptart and Harvey Pekar's Real Life stories.

WHAT HAS LEAST INFLUENCED YOU IN YOUR LIFE AND CAREER?
SLOPPY SECONDS- The vegetarian movement.

IS YOUR MUSIC A COLLABORATION OR DOES ONE GUY DO IT ALL?
SLOPPY SECONDS- B.A. writes all the lyrics & the music is usually provided by either Bo'ba or Roadkill. We usually collaborate on songs.

HAVE THERE BEEN MANY PEOPLE WHO TOOK YOU SERIOUSLY AND WERE OFFENDED? ANY GOOD RELATED STORIES?
SLOPPY SECONDS- Toxic Shock did receive a few boycott threats over the release of "I Don't Wanna Be A Homosexual." My guess is that they never bothered to look at the lyric sheet. If you know the words, it's hard to take that song in a negative light.

DO YOU HAVE ANY COOL AND UNUSUAL COLLECTIONS?
SLOPPY SECONDS- Yeah, we all collect old toys and games. Wacky Packages, trading cards. Steve is really into 70s blaxploitation films.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CARTOON INDUSTRY NOW VS YOUR CHILDHOOD?
SLOPPY SECONDS- Are you serious? There is no comparison. I'll put the Mighty Heroes up against the Ninja Turtles any day of the week. But there is hope for the future. Matt Groening, John Kricfalusi and Savage Steve Holland all produce excellent shows. Batman and the X-Men are great also, but there's nothing like the Wacky Races or Scooby Doo on these days.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO PLAY?
SLOPPY SECONDS- Any place where we have a solid following. Some great cities for us are Boston, Philadelphia, San Antonio and Chicago. New Jersey has always been good for us, too.

ARE THERE ANY BAND "GOALS" OR "PURPOSES?"
SLOPPY SECONDS- Spread the Junk Rock gospel, I guess.

ALL OF YOUR RELEASES HAVE PRETTY MUCH THE SAME FEEL TO THEM, YOU'VE PRESERVED THE QUALITIES OF YOUR EARLY WORK WELL, SO PEOPLE CAN'T REALLY SAY "I ONLY LIKE THEIR EARLY STUFF," DO YOU ATTRIBUTE THIS TO ANYTHING?
SLOPPY SECONDS- It may be because we still draw inspiration from the same things. We still play the hell out of our old Ramones records & we still watch Star Trek re-runs. I guess the only real difference is that our musicianship has improved somewhat.

WHO ARE YOUR IDOLS NOW? AND AT AGE 10 OR SO?
SLOPPY SECONDS- Well, the Ramones, obviously. John Waters, Rudy Ray Moore, Russ Meyer, we love all their films. When we were 10 years old, there was only one idol: Evel Knievel. He was God.

WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF THE BAND?
SLOPPY SECONDS- The same things we do in the band, except...unplugged? We used to have jobs, but we gave them up to devote our full attention to the band. Now work and play are the same thing.

WHO ARE THE "MEYER GIRLS" SUNG ABOUT ON YOUR LATEST ALBUM?
SLOPPY SECONDS- Listen carefully. I want you to go to the coolest video store in your area, and ask the clerk for Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. Or Supervixens. Or Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! The women you will observe with the enormous mams are all Russ Meyer girls. You will not be disappointed

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ALBUMS OF ALL TIME?
SLOPPY SECONDS- Kiss's Destroyer, Queen's Sheer Heart Attack, Ziggy Stardust, Billion Collar Babies, Ramones Leave Home, L.A.M.F., The Clash...

MANY OF YOUR SONGS DEAL WITH GIRLS, HAS THIS ALWAYS BEEN A BIG PART OF THE BAND& IS IT THAT MAJOR A PART IN YOUR LIFE?
SLOPPY SECONDS- I think songs about girls have always been a big theme in rock and roll. If something occupies your mind, it's logical you end up writing about it.

WHAT IS YOUR OPINION OF THE WHOLE RIOT GRRL MOVEMENT & SUCH?
SLOPPY SECONDS- No opinion. We don't listen to any of those bands. At least I've never heard any of 'em.

WHAT BANDS DO YOU MOST WANT TO PLAY WITH?
SLOPPY SECONDS- We just played a DESCENDENTS reunion gig. That was really cool. The RAMONES and DICKIES are probably the two bands we want most to play with. REDD KROSS, maybe.

I NOTICE IN YOUR PROMO PICTURE, THERE IS A PICTURE OF LAURA PALMER, MIXED WITH THE OLD CLASSIC TOYS, ANY EXPLANATION?
SLOPPY SECONDS- David Lynch never adequately explained Laura Palmer. How could we?

WHAT DO YOU THINK HAPPENED TO ELVIS?
SLOPPY SECONDS- He died in the army, and was replaced by a double who couldn't act, sing rock n'roll or refuse desserts.

WHAT'S YOUR OPINION ON THIS TREND OF BRINGING BACK OLD TOY CONCEPTS (EX. BIG GI JOE, TRANSFORMERS, THOSE TROLL THINGS, CARE BEARS)?
SLOPPY SECONDS- I don't know why they bother. they try to update and homogenize old toy concepts, so that the finished product has little to do with the classic originals.

WHAT IS THE WORST SHOW YOU EVER PLAYED AND WHAT HAPPENED?
SLOPPY SECONDS- I was on codeine and dumped beer, scotch, and marijuana on top of it. I almost never smoke pot, and I can't handle it. It was a nightmare. I kept blacking out during the show. I guess I'll never know how bad I really was that night.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ITEMS THAT BRING YOU LUCK?
SLOPPY SECONDS- Well, having a penis has always made sex easier to come by..

WHAT IS YOU FAVORITE INSECT AND WHY?
SLOPPY SECONDS- Insects suck. I like spiders because they kill insects.

WHAT IS YOUR RELIGIOUS ORIENTATION?
SLOPPY SECONDS- We'll are from basically Protestant families, but we weren't like, raised in the church or anything. We're heathens, basically.
